GRITO

GRITO is a VSCO Voices exhibition and event by photographer Lauren V. Allen. For the event, I was asked to create a logo and marketing materials such as a save the date, poster, social banners, and other typographic assets. The following statement is pulled directly from GRITO’s description:
Lauren Vied Allen’s documentary short film GRITO begins with a declaration. “Our grito is a cathartic yell of honor,” youthful voices proclaim. “It is self-acceptance of our heritage. It is a deep longing for Mexico, a place to which we are connected by heart, but disconnected by land. Our grito is our pride. It’s our pain. It’s our joy.”
This VSCO Voices project is a film and portrait series that documents immigrant youth in North Carolina as they discover facets of their culture through ballet folkórico, a Mexican folk dance. Centered around the dance troupe De Colores, GRITO showcases the richness of Mexican culture as displayed through traditional dance and the resilience of a community navigating prejudice in the rural South.
Illustration assets on the poster are by Goldsboro, NC artist Celeste Aguirre Oñate.
